Violent Videogames to be avoided at the Olympics
Friday 1st September 2017, 09:16 | written by: Gabriel SciberrasThe 2024 Olympic Games have had heavy thoughts on including esports in the events. Thanks to the International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, we finally have our answer:
"We want to promote non-discrimination, non-violence, and peace among people. This doesn't match with video games, which are about violence, explosions, and killing. And there were have to draw a clear line."
If you’re a sport videogame fan, you’re probably bursting with relief while Call of Duty and Overwatch enthusiasts may sulk in the corner. It could be argued that they’re being a little strict but if you think about it, all is understandable. Such titles haven’t been confirmed as out of the question, yet we can assume that they don’t hold to the “Olympic values”. Sport games such as FIFA, Madden, UFC and all those are definitely in their gaze. Thomas Bach continues below:
"So if ever somebody is competing at playing football virtually or playing other sports virtually, this is of high interest. We hope that, then, these players are really delivering sports performance. If [fans] at the end would even play the sports in the real world, we would even be more happy."
"Attracting young sports is not an issue," Bach said. "It is more for us selecting the right ones."
Yes, we could take about the initiatives being taken for the 2028 Olympic Games but honestly, it’s too far away.
