The New AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processors - Where's Intel?

The folks over at AMD have just revealed their new line-up of Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processors through a YouTube advert. Despite the name of 'Threadripper' always being rather cool, the specifications behind the new line-up look to lead the industry and offer the question - where is Intel?

Let's recap all of the listed features in the promotional video:

  • The first and only 64 core professional workstation processor
  • The fastest professional workstation processor ever
  • Leading single and multithreaded performance
  • 128 PCIe 4.0 Lanes for Next-Gen GPUs and Storage Devices
  • 8 memory channels for unmatched memory bandwidth

The line-up of processors is split up into subgroups depending on the number of cores, threads and other specifications, with the top of the line ticking all the boxes. By now, it's clear that this new line-up isn't particularly catered towards gaming but to professionals and content creators.

With regards to the idea of competition, Intel definitely has some work to do. 64 cores have not yet been achieved by Intel and give AMD the current advantage in this regard. Last month, Intel revealed their 10th Generation core, or more specifically, the i9-10900K which is struggling to compete in some regards. Overall, they seem to be another incremental update which doesn't offer much in terms of innovation, paving the way for AMD to release something like the Threadripper Pro series above.

Also, it seems that Intel has chosen to not launch any high-end desktop processors this year, voiding any competition to AMD for whatever reason. This is likely due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic in some way.

Personally, I'm no expert when it comes to CPUs and being able to compare between chipsets - so this is where I'd go to the comments section. Who's currently winning the war - Intel or AMD?
