Intel’s 8th Generation Core CPUs Revealed
Friday 25th August 2017, 11:48 | written by: Gabriel SciberrasFour 15W U-series mobile CPUs have been announced by Intel; new iterations of the core i7 and i5. Quite boldly, a 40% speed boost is proclaimed thanks to a doubled amount of threads and cores, there being four cores and eight threads.
Launching on the 21st August, which passed a couple days ago, the new chips are quite similar to the Kaby Lake models and thus, many consider them a refresh. These at a 14nm+ process node, are only temporary as Coffee Lake will move to 14nm++, Cannon Lake at 10nm and Ice Lake at 10nm+. From what we’ve got right now, some testing by Anandtech compares them to the 7th generation chips below.
Integrated graphics have been upgraded from HD 620 to UHD 620. As you’d expect, this refers to their functionality when it comes to 4k playback and video processing. Therefore, HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 is standard while the chip will also handle VR and 3D.
Regarding dates, laptops will start rolling out with i7 cores later this year and desktop versions this fall. Let’s see if what Intel claims holds true.
