German Party Surprisingly includes Esports into Election Platform

With the federal elections of Germany coming up soon, the Christian Democratic Union made an addition to their platform that nobody saw coming. Esports was to be supported by the party headed by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The CDU confess that video games are an “important cultural asset” and have assured that they will "positively support the development of esports and take care of suitable conditions." Those in the know of German politics have read that statement a few times. Don’t worry, this isn’t a political based article. Back to the element of surprise, it is so since the CDU have been reported against esports with outright hate towards CS:GO and Crysis 2 as example of violent games. Even last year, the party recognised esports as a “trend sport” not ready for support as it “lacks its own motoric activity”.

However, the change in direction is advantageous for Germany’s largest organisation of videogames consisting of Activision Blizzard, Riot Games in Germany and ESL. They have now secured the enthusiasm of the CDU.

All things aside, esports will undoubtedly have a negligible political effect, but it could definitely assist in spreading the development of the industry in central Europe.
