Another Battle Royale? Really? Have we not had enough?

I know, I know, it must be overwhelming tuning into general gaming news to only hear about old, present and upcoming battle royales slightly tweaking the general formula and demanding the entire world's attention. That, in my opinion, is where Fall Guys is completely different apart from a few other things. This new battle royale has completely shaken up the formula, the genre and the mechanics of how to be on top. Read on as we dive into this new prospect.

Under the full name of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, the new title made its debut this month on both Steam and Playstation. Presenting itself as a free monthly game for Playstation Plus users and at only $10 on Steam, it's incredibly accessible at a decent price. Announced three months ago, it'll be easier to describe the gameplay by first showing off a gameplay trailer:

One big third-person platforming death run thrown into a blender and drowned in a bucket of fruit-flavoured Skittles - that's what Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is. In these times of misery for many of us, isolated and restricted in lifestyle, this new fresh piece of the rainbow looks to freshen things up for everybody. Driven by a child-like graphics model, the level of competition and refined movement is anything but childish. To add to this point, the gameplay has been so enthralling that over 2 million copies have been sold on Steam in less than a week - do note that this disregards the Playstation player base entirely.

The gameplay goes something like this. A certain number of players are set to tackle a course together in Phase 1. Through this first phase, players qualify for the second stage by achieving a good enough placing. Usually a touch more than half of the players make it this far.

Then, a second phase is then played out. Once again, players compete to get a good enough placing. Usually, roughly 16-20 make it to the next phase - the team phase. Here, the remaining players are pitted in a team game - possibly football, where a joint effort is needed to push the ball into the opposing goal. Only the winning team proceeds.

Following this, there's the final - an unforgiving free-for-all where it boils down to the final jump at the crown. It's a different type of intense and it's great to see variety run the gaming industry. Earning a first-place win is truly an achievement.

If you're tired of the shooter battle royale, I highly recommend giving this a shot.
